Sword and Dagger - A New Dark Fantasy Drawing in Progress

Two figures stand amid encroaching darkness. Their aggression is clear, but something stronger, and possibly more dangerous, lies beneath it – fear.
They've learned to distrust nearly everything in life, but with each other, they've found an unusual level of safety and certainty.
Sword and Dagger is a symbolic work of dark fantasy art representing a close bond between two people – a pair who consistently stand for each other when almost no one else has.
On a creative level, this piece represents some notable changes for me:
In terms of content, it's the first work I've made that was not inspired by my own experience of life, but someone else's. Aesthetically, it continues the recent evolution of my art toward increased visual clarity, emotional directness, and reduced ornamentation.
The Inspiration for Sword and Dagger
The imagery for this piece came from my observation of a platonic connection between a man in his later years of life and a woman in early adulthood.
The man has lost much, and the many years behind him have sealed his place in the world. His confrontational demeanor is not simple posturing – it protects the part of him that is kind, gentle, and generous. The part of him that has too often been betrayed.
He is heavily armored and stands ready to draw his sword. He carries the banner for a life he never intended, but will die to defend.
The woman is an adult, but she is burdened with the kind of restless fear that lives in childhood wounds. Unlike the man, she hasn't developed armor. Instead, she relies on evasion and a heightened sense of alertness to protect her.
When pushed far enough, she strikes quickly – and often recklessly. Her humanity is more visible than the man's, but she is more vulnerable as a result.
They stand among the roots and twisting branches of a life that has conspired to keep them trapped.
Old patterns. Inherited beliefs.
Lost time.
Yet they protect and fight for one another with an unspoken loyalty that shames the pretenses of most superficially loving relationships.
Together, they hold their ground with worn but unwavering resolve, and cautiously, steadily, take each step forward through the darkness.
The Creation of Sword and Dagger
This drawing extends the evolution of my art style from an emphasis on detail and precision into a more clearly symbolic presentation that leans on heavy use of shape and shadow.

This change reflects the greater understanding I've developed around my work, something I talked about in detail from my experiences through five years of art blogging.
In previous drawings, I built the structure of my images using a fine-tipped pencil. In contrast, I blocked out the composition for Sword and Dagger using a wide-tipped, rough-edged brush in Photoshop.
This enabled me to make fast, gestural marks, relying on felt experience over meticulous execution.

Heavy shadows emerged from the sadness I feel in the pair, while sharp and angular lines mirror the sense of protective pride they carry. Stark silhouettes pair with clear framing of the trees to mark the unforgiving reality of their circumstances.
The most recent image shown here reflects a work in progress, but all the essential visual information is in place.
I'll share more on this piece when it's ready.

I post process videos, sketches, and behind-the-scenes work as new art takes shape. If you'd like to see the next stages of this world as it's built, you can find me here:
